    Code of Ethics, Professional Values and the Ethical Reasoning and Justification

    Why join the workshop?

    This course deals with professional values and attitudes required of the CPA in his /her relationships and engagements. More importantly, it deals with ethical reasoning and justification as a model for resolving ethical dilemmas in any situation that the professional could be involved in. It is a WHAT AND HOW course on resolving ethical dilemmas in the workplace and in the professions as applied in the Accountancy profession.

    The traditional manner by which ethical dilemmas are resolved is to revisit codes of ethics and use these standards as the basis for decision making. While it is admitted that codes are important in resolving dilemmas, they are so construed as “do’s and don’ts” as to mitigate against the person’s exercise of moral and ethical judgment, which lies at the center of resolving ethical issues and problems. Codes are by their construction prescriptive, do not allow for high critical thought when applied, and are not complete as to incorporate all possible ethical situations that the person may face in his / her milieu.


    At the end of the program, participants will be able to:

    • Have a complete grasp and understanding of the Codes of Professional Ethics of the Accountants as applied in the engagements of the CPA

    • Have obtained a thorough understanding, analysis and application of the ethical reasoning and justification process to resolve ethical dilemmas in the practice

    • Have developed a problem-solving and decision-making technique for resolving ethical dilemmas in the workplace

    Who Should Attend:

    CPA practitioners in the various sectors of industry, public practice, education and government. Other non-CPAs are also possible participants in that the course teaches everyone how to resolve ethical dilemmas in the workplace.


    More specifically, this workshop will cover the following topics:

    • The overview of the code of professional conduct, values, and principles

    • Identifying and understanding ethical issues and problems in personal, work, and professional situations

    • Determining and understanding ethical standards, principles, values and code of ethics

    • Understanding the moral development framework

    • Applying the ethical reasoning and justification process in ethical resolution

    • Understanding and applying the moral imagination framework in ethical resolution

    • Evaluating the impact of ethical decisions
