Handling Conflicts in the Workplace: Building Trust and Sensitivity

    Why join the workshop?

Conflicts are inevitable in the workplace. That’s a fact. But how we handle our conflicts are well within our control and the success of these resolutions is dependent on our attitude towards conflicts and relationships.

Every self-improvement initiative begins with self-awareness. The workshop commences with some self-awareness activities to identify our tendencies toward a particular conflict management style.  Knowledge of the 5 conflict management styles based on Thomas-Kilmann’s framework on Conflict Modes and their appropriate applications to certain scenarios will be discussed and practiced. Participants will be able to identify their strengths in handling these types of situations, as well as reflect on areas of their communication that need to be toned down or highlighted more.

From self-awareness, participants will be led into relationship-building through helpful points to handling conflicts. The group will be guided into a special activity of meaningful dialogues to exercise their empathy and sensitivity to others. The workshop will provide a safe, non-intimidating place for openness and genuine care and respect for others.

The workshop ends with individual resolutions (and group resolutions, if they apply) toward improved management of conflicts and relationships within the workplace.

    Objectives:

    • Identify their individual tendencies toward a particular conflict management style depending on their (1) assertiveness, the extent to which the individual attempts to satisfy his or her own concerns, and (2) cooperativeness, the extent to which the individual attempts to satisfy other people’s concerns. The 5 conflict-handling modes are (Thomas-Kilmann):

      • Competing

      • Collaborating

      • Compromising

      • Accommodating

      • Avoiding

    • Identify the benefits and challenges of each of the 5 conflict-handling modes and determine their appropriate applications and communication styles in various situations

    • Learn helpful and practical guides to handling conflicts

      • Empathy vs. running assumptions and hasty generalizations of others

      • Effective Communication

        • Tone of voice

        • Non-verbal cues

        • “I” vs. “You” statements (assertive vs. aggressive language)

        • “Should”

        • Rephrasing attacking statements into proactive statements

      • Active Listening and Empathetic Dialogue

    • Engage in meaningful dialogue to exercise and promote empathy and sensitivity for relationship-building (or relationship-deepening) and peace-keeping

    • Commit to individual resolutions (and group resolutions, if they apply) toward improved management of conflicts and relationships

    Who Should Attend:

The workshop is ideal for supervisors/ managers who lead a team. HR professionals will also benefit from this workshop so they can aid teams and leaders in conflict situations.

    Outline:

    For individual participants:

    • Help identify their typical response to conflict, so that when faced with workplace conflicts in the future, they will be better aware of their instinctive reaction, as well as weigh the pros and cons of that reaction for the specific situation.

    • Apply the most appropriate conflict management style to resolve various situations

    • Apply helpful guides to handling conflicts and improve communication skills founded on empathetic listening

    • Commit to proactive resolutions toward better self-awareness and relationship-building

    For groups:

    • Develop a collegiate environment that practices openness, trust-building, empathy and sensitivity for the needs of its members

    • Enhance communication skills and empathetic listening

    • Create a positive environment for better corporate morale

    For the organization

    • Build more respectful and professional relationships among employees which contributes to the office culture

    • Encourage healthier discussions and collaborations so employees can provide solutions and innovate

    • Encourage objective decision making since employees are able to set aside tensions
